Can essential oils be added to steamer?

Do not put essential oil in the steamer to prevent the lid from breaking up
Does this require distilled water or is it ok to use tap water (I have a water softener)

It is ok with tap water
How hot can the generator get?
- Maximum Temperature Reached: 122° Fahrenheit (50° Celsius)
My steamer gets hot and boils - but it does not produce steam anymore. I thought it might be because the plastic round insert with holes in it on the inside has come loose and I'm not sure where it goes.. can you help please?
